What do you do when giving up just isn't an option? I know, a weird question to ask. I ask this question because know it or not you yourself will be faced with this question, I have.
In the creative world as an artist, photographer, stylist or whatever it is that you do creatively you will find yourself hit a wall where you just want to do that, give up. Here are a few things that I’ve learned through my season of wanting to give up, but knowing that is just never the option.
1. The Why
Often times when not your why will help you get through the toughest times. Don’t know you why? Well, when you want to give up that’s a good time to ask yourself why are you doing whatever it is that you are doing? Why do you paint or journal? Why do you photograph or write? Why do you create? That reason should give you wind beneath your wings. The Why will also point you in the direction of your inspiration and your inspiration will help you continue. Spend some time here, ask yourself the hard questions and re-build your belief in you, in your work.
2. Seek A Friend
It is beneficial to have a friend you trust that you can talk with about all the things you’ve been processing. When we talk about our struggles or idea’s you’ll find that pieces of your puzzle will be put together. I, personally, am always amazed at what comes out of my conversation with a dear friend. Most of the time my struggle isn’t as big as I originally thought and my idea’s become clearer in my mind.
3. Take A Break
It may sound scary to take a break some your work, but it must be done. The key here is to focus on something else. Taking a break can mean stepping away from the computer and taking a walk. Un-plugging for a week and just reading a book for that time. It can mean stepping away from that canvas that’s not working out and picking up your camera instead. Taking a break is different for everyone so find a way that works best for you.
4. Don’t Stress Out
First off, stress isn’t good for your health and second, stress never accomplishes anything, it just makes things worse. As weird as it sounds, embrace this season of questioning, of wanting to give up as you will be surprised that even hard seasons bring good fruit. Ever heard of how a diamond is made?
5. Just Keep Going
It really is as simple as that. Just keep doing what you are doing as most times the feeling of wanting to give up will pass & you will find yourself in a new place, with new ideas and something new to create.
This is what I’ve learned through a few ‘feeling like giving up’ seasons of my own and what I do to quickly get out of them as giving up just isn’t an options nor something I’d ever really want to do.
